German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

National agency for university cooperation in the EU

The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DAAD) is the national agency for university cooperation in the EU and simultaneously the largest support organization for the international exchange of students and scientists worldwide. Since its foundation in 1925, DAAD has supported over 1.5 million academics domestically and internationally, and it is supported as an association by German universities and student bodies. Its operations extend much further than scholarships: the DAAD supports the internationalization of German universities, strengthens German cultural and language studies abroad, supports developing countries in establishing efficient universities, and advises decision makers on educational, foreign, and developmental policy.

The DAAD has defined five general program goals:

  • To attract young, foreign elites to study or research in Germany, and to maintain lifelong partnerships with them
  • To qualify Germany’s young researchers and leaders for the best positions in the world in a spirit of tolerance and openness
  • To support the internationalization and attractiveness of German universities
  • To strengthen the study of German language, literature, regional and cultural studies at foreign universities
  • To support developing countries in the south and reform states in the east in developing efficient university systems

IPU Berlin takes advantage of numerous DAAD opportunities. Above all, IPU makes use of the expanded mobility program Erasmus+ for cooperation within the European Higher Education Area. With help from the DAAD support program PROMOS, IPU Berlin is expanding its contacts outside of Europe, and it is using the STIBET program to support foreign students enrolled at IPU Berlin. Additionally, IPU is making use of structural support opportunities for cooperation and stabilization in the university framework in the Balkans.

You can learn more about grant opportunities for studies, research, internships or teaching abroad online at the  DAAD Scholarship Database (German only).
