Scholarships for International Students and PhD Candidates in the STIBET Program

With the STIBET program, the DAAD provides (partial) scholarships financed by the German Federal Foreign Office for German universities, which are intended to be granted to foreign students. Students taking undergraduate studies (Bachelor) as well as those on postgraduate courses (Master or PhD) can receive support. The students have to be enrolled in a regular study course which concludes with being awarded one of the above-named degrees.

The scholarships (degree scholarships and scholarships for especially committed students) which are granted under STIBET can be awarded solely to foreign students:

"Foreign students are all those non-German students enrolled in professional study courses, who are of foreign nationality and who gained their university entrance qualification abroad, regardless of whether they had to take an assessment test in Germany or were accepted directly onto the university study course (i.e. also EU citizens)." (DAAD.de)

Once a year, the International Office announces the scholarships available, for which foreign students can apply. On the one hand, especially dedicated foreign students who demonstrate a commitment to their foreign fellow students can fundamentally be supported. On the other hand, there are support options available intended to assist foreign students in being able to complete their studies at the IPU Berlin. The partial scholarships range from between €250 and €650 monthly for a period of up to 3 months.

Partial support for especially committed students or PhD candidates

The preconditions for support are that the student or PhD candidate have gained good study achievements, in addition to distinguishing themselves at their university through their outstanding commitment and engagement in an international context, which could be verified for instance by the setting-up of a "buddy program" to support new foreign students. Further fields of activity can for instance be social and professional supervision and monitoring work, language-based tandem cooperative arrangements, assistance in cultural programs, organization of excursions, arranging events to explore the country and its culture, care and supervision activities in student dormitories, language courses, etc. The support is provided for 1 to 3 months.

Degree support

The preconditions for the support are that students and PhD candidates have gained good study achievements and are expected to conclude their studies successfully within one year. Furthermore, the scholarships provided here to complete a degree are intended to permit foreign students and PhD candidates, who are in need due to no fault of their own, to concentrate on their studies and gain their degree with financial support. The degree scholarships can be granted for a maximum of six months.
