Set up Multi Factor Authentication

To better protect your IPU account and your personal data and to increase IT security at the IPU, we use multi-factor authentication (MFA). When you log in to Microsoft 365 with your IPU account, you will be asked to confirm your identity on your smartphone.

MFA is one of the most effective measures against cyber attacks and would have prevented the attack in almost all known cases of successful attacks on universities if it had already been established.

Below you will find the instructions for setting up the recommended procedure via the Microsoft Authenticator app. Choose your instructions depending on whether you are reading this on your computer or smartphone. We recommend setting it up on your computer.

If you would like to use a different authenticator or do not have a smartphone, you can find alternatives in the FAQs below.

In addition to these instructions, open the page https://aka.ms/mfasetup and log in if necessary. You will then be asked to enter further information to protect your account.

A: Yes, any TOTP-compatible app can be used. To do this, select "I want to use a different authenticator app" during setup

Q: What do I do if I don't have a smartphone or other device on which I can install an Authenticator app?

A: During setup, select "I want to set up another method" and then "Phone". You then have the option of entering a telephone number and can decide whether a code should be sent to the telephone number by text message if required or whether a call should be made to the number, which you then accept and confirm by pressing the # button on the telephone.
