Student initiatives at the IPU

Discover the diverse initiatives launched by our students at the IPU Berlin, which contribute significantly to our vibrant campus life.

Student Council (StuRa)

The StuRa represents the interests of all IPU students vis-à-vis the administration, teaching staff, and university management. It consists of 10 members elected annually by the student body, and its two chairpersons, the senators, are permanent members of the Academic Senate, where they have full voting rights. This makes the StuRa a central part of the IPU's academic self-administration and serves as the first point of contact in conflicts between the university and students. It also supports the implementation of student projects—such as lectures, parties, or movie nights—which can be financed with the help of the StuRa's annual budget.

First Generation

Through the First Generation project, we want to reach out to people who, like us, come from families where no one or hardly anyone has studied at a (German-speaking) university (psychology or similar) (rule of thumb: if this sounds like you, feel free to join us!).

We want to create a space for networking and support, across disciplines and for all semesters. The joys and fears of social mobility, financing and scholarships, as well as tone and style in academic writing are just a few examples of topics we can discuss. After each event, we also want to go to a cozy restaurant together, where the first drink is on us. There you can continue the conversations and make new contacts.

GreenIPU

GreenIPU is a student initiative that addresses climate change from a psychological and psychoanalytical perspective, taking a critical look at the complex interactions between and understandings of “nature” and “humans.” Meetings are held on an irregular basis. Anyone interested can contact green.ipu(at)ipu-berlin.de.

krIPU

krIPU, short for kritische IPU (critical IPU), is an open initiative by students at the International Psychoanalytic University Berlin, or IPU for short. krIPU was founded in 2015 and has since been home to several generations of students. Its members meet regularly to discuss the possibilities and limitations of political psychoanalysis that is critical of society and ideology. Our main field of activity at krIPU is organizing public lecture series with a psychoanalytical and interdisciplinary focus and intervening in university politics. The reform of psychotherapy training that came into force in 2020 threatens to completely wipe psychoanalysis off the map at state universities, where it is already in a precarious position, and to further narrow university teaching to the clinical and therapeutic. We want to counteract this. We believe that psychoanalysis is more than psychotherapy; it is the critical knowledge of the powers of the unconscious and the irrational that continue to operate in the subject and society and need to be elucidated.

Queer IPU

The Queer IPU is aimed at queer IPU students and those interested in queer issues, and aims to provide a space for networking and engagement. In the past, the Queer IPU has initiated a series of events, written a foreword for an anthology on psychoanalysis and transgender issues, and organized regular open meetings. We welcome anyone who would like to get involved in the Queer IPU or just drop by for an informal get-together.
