Using a fictional scene from early human history, Sigmund Freud encourages us to think about humanity's departure from nature and the role of the psyche in the transition to culture. This short lecture will take up this idea and briefly explain why a science of the human psyche must always also be a cultural science.
The event is aimed at anyone interested in the new master's program Psychoanalytic Cultural Studies and Cultural Psychology at the IPU Berlin. It offers an opportunity to learn about key topics of the program, as well as about the IPU Berlin, the study format, and one of the future lecturers.
Dr. Pradeep Chakkarath researches and teaches at the Chair of Social Theory and Social Psychology at Ruhr University Bochum. He is co-director of the Hans Kilian and Lotte Köhler Center (KKC) for Social and Cultural Psychology and Historical Anthropology. Starting in the winter semester 2025/2026, he will teach in the new MA Psychoanalytic Cultural Studies and Cultural Psychology program at the IPU Berlin.
The short presentation will take place online via Zoom and will include a concise introduction lasting approximately 30 minutes. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to ask questions—both about the presentation and about the new degree program and the study conditions at the IPU.
