AI and Psychoanalysis

Exploring the implications of artificial intelligence for psychotherapeutic practice

Since the first version of the large language model ChatGPT was made publicly available in 2022, artificial intelligence has become a topic of widespread public discourse and is rapidly integrating into our everyday lives. People now delegate aspects of their imagination to virtual entities with a subject-like presence, hold conversations with AI, and even engage in virtual relationships. In the field of psychotherapy, AI applications are increasingly expected to compete with human therapists as a more cost-effective alternative. These technologies are available at the touch of a button—but can they truly replace a therapist? What kind of ontological status does a relationship with software possess? Will we need a psychodynamic concept of pathology related to AI use? And what potential benefits could AI offer for clinical research? In this evening event, we will explore the implications of AI’s growing presence in psychotherapeutic contexts. A short talk by Frederik Wellmann (M.A. in Clinical Psychology) will be followed by a panel discussion with invited guests.

The event is hosted by “Themenklasse AI und Psychoanalyse” as part of “Deutschlandstipendium” at IPU Berlin:
