The IPU ensures equal opportunities and gender equality for women and men, as well as for people in special situations ("persons with disabilities"). The range of services and support provided by the Equal Opportunities Representative is intended for the students and staff of the IPU. Furthermore, the representative provides advice to the university management on equal opportunity issues.
The IPU aims especially to support the careers of women and achieve a reconciliation between studies, private lives and careers. In this regard, the IPU takes as its basis in particular the gender equality standards of the German Research Council (DFG), the recommendations of the Federal State (Land) Conference of Women's Representatives at Berlin Universities (LaKoF Berlin), as well as the Working Group for Berlin University-based Women and Gender Studies Institutes (afg Berlin).
The IPU strives to have quantitative equal distribution of women and men in the various status groups. This has already been achieved to a large extent in the various status groups (lecturing staff, administrative staff).
The IPU pursues a proactive policy with respect to the various needs of people in special situations, such as for instance by providing accessibility to its premises and electronic media, as well as by having the required disadvantage or disability compensation regulations in its selection procedures and examinations for all of its study courses. This is laid down in its framework study and examination regulation as well as in the respective study and examination regulations for the individual study courses.
Furthermore, the IPU regards itself as obliged to comply with the requirements of the German General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) and the EU anti-discrimination Directives, which it implements especially in its personnel policy, as well as in its co-operative activities with students and external partners.
