Vortrag zur Ur-Geschichte der Psychoanalyse

“The Freud-Ferenczi controversy in light of Emma Eckstein’s circumcision”

The Freud-Ferenczi controversy about the accessibility of traumatic memories and Ferenczi’s criticism of  the “unilaterally androphile orientation” of Freud’s sexual theory are re-discussed in the light of Freud’s split reaction to the childhood trauma (circumcision) experienced by Emma Eckstein and revived in her analysis with Freud, which was concurrent with the foundation of psychoanalysis.

Carlo Bonomi, PhD, is a supervising analyst at the Harry Stack Sullivan Institute of Psychoanalysis, Florence, Founding President of the Associazione culturale Sándor Ferenczi, and member of the board of the Sándor Ferenczi International Foundation. His last book The Cut and the Building of Psychoanalysis. Volume I Sigmund Freud and Emma Eckstein, has just been published in the Relational Perspectives Book Series (Routledge, 2015).
